There are two species of lotus with the conspicuous flowers Nelumbo nucifera and Nelumbo lutea, Nelumbonaceae:

The lotus tree from the story of Odysseus is named Zizyphus lotus, Rhamnaceae, lives in South-Europe and North-Africa and is also called lotus plum in cause of its edible fruits:

In old pharmacopoeias ( end of 18th century ) you find the name Celtis ( several species ) for lotus tree:

Fazit: lotus leaves are the leaves of Nelumbo, lotus tree leaves today the leaves of Zizyphus and about 250 years ago the leaves of Celtis or Zizyphus
Reply:The lotus tree (Greek lĂ´tos) was a plant in Greek mythology bearing a fruit that caused a pleasant drowsiness and growing in North Africa. This fruit was reported to be the only food of an island people called the Lotus-Eaters. In Homer’s Odyssey those of Odysseus' men who ate the fruit lost all desire to leave the island and had to be forced away. In another story from Greek mythology, the nymph, Lotis, is turned into a lotus tree.
