I found a few sites that could help you out with your question (I'll add it below). I have a few lilies planted too and all I did was make sure they get the required amount of sunlight and water. I hope the links I sent help you out too.





For your mosquito problem, you could try attracting dragonflies and/or birds (such as purple martins) around the pond area. I'll include a couple good links to those too. I have purple martins at my house every year too, and I don't see many mosquitoes as I used to. Also, if you'd like to know how to make your own insect repellent/summer cooler, here's the recipe:





"5 drops each of geranium and lavender essential oils


2 drops each of lemongrass and peppermint essential oils





Fill up a 2 fl.oz. spray bottle with filtered or spring water and add the drops. Shake it before each use."





It was originally something I found in a magazine that's used to keep you cool when you get too hot. You just spray it on your face or anywhere you want... Since lemongrass is in it, I realized it also doubles as a natural insect repellent. If you don't want the flower smells in it too, you could put citronella in place of the geranium and lavender.

EDIT: I also thought of something else that could help you out. Since dragonflies and martins are diurnal, you might think of putting up a bat house to attract bats that might be in your area. I read somewhere a while back that bats can eat double their weight in insects in one night. =)
Reply:Best way to avoid mosquitos is to make sure the water isn't stagnant. If you can afford it install a small recirculation pump. Not only will you avoid mosquitos but you could incorporate a neat little waterfall / stream look as well.

Reply:Lilly and Lotus require water and ideally a pond. Most important for the pond is the depth and the organisms inside. You cannot have just pure fresh water and grow lilly. That is why, ponds has to be in open.
Reply:The Lotus can be grown only in pond with mud init's root.I know nothing about lilly
Reply:These are very easy to grow. All you need is a pit which can be coated with cement or lined with a thick black polyethylene sheet. Alternatively, one can use a cement tub or even a large pot, which can be lowered to rim level in the mud.





If there is no open ground available the container (It can be a plastic or fiber glass tub) can be kept on the ground. Any outlets existing should be blocked of course. Place a layer of mud about 3inches deep on the bottom, fill with water. wait a couple of days if the water is chlorinated, then plant the lily 0r lotus bulbs in the mud under the water level. The water level should be about 6 inches above the mud level.





Once in a fortnight some weak fertilizer(1 gm/litre rose mix or NPK 15-15-15 can be given. The tub should be in the open in full sun. At least two hours of direct sunlight is usually needed.





Neem based organic pesticides or guppies in the water will control mosquito larvae.





I have some nice lilies growing in a cement tub for about five years now set up as mentioned here.
