What do you think of Lotus births?
Lotus births are beautiful :) One of my sisters had both of her babies lotus style, combined with Hypnobirthing; childbirth in our culture is commonly like that (but doesn't go by the 'lotus' name). She said the births were wonderful and wants to do it again (she also was very calm and had hardly any pain).

For that person saying to get a c-section and an epidural: shut the hell up. Caesareans are very serious surgery that ought to be done only when medically needed. And it has been proven that epidurals can prolong labor and have a negative effect on the baby. So let me say it again: STFU and try learning something before you open your mouth.
Reply:To the midwife, actually cutting the cord is more likely to lead to infection as it is like an open wound. The placenta doesn't smell as it is rubbed with lavender oils and salt. Report It

Reply:I had a lotus birth with my last daughter who is now 8 months old. The difference between her and my first daughter who was not a lotus birth was truly amazing. I HIGHLY recommend lotus birth, and I am happy to answer any questions on it, more info needs to be out there. Melandbrett7@bigpond.com Report It

Reply:interesting idea that i have never heard of. I think for myself, for practical reasons, it wouldn't work very well. i imagine it would be difficult to carry both baby and placenta around while waiting for it to fall away naturally. I think that it's fine for those with religious or spiritual reasons, and a lot of dedication, to do. I think that the positive effects noted are probably related to the fact that these parents are obviously willing to completly dedicate every second of that first bit of time to caring for their newborn. I don't imagine that a babysitter would be comfortable with the situation. It's probably the attention and comfort from being near such a calm, Zen parent that provides the benefits.
Reply:Sounds like a huge hassle for no real benefit.
Reply:Why would anyone do that???????????
Reply:I think it's a very interesting form of birth, but not for me.
Reply:Didn't think much of it nd can't see what benefits it would be to either mother or child
Reply:As a midwife it seems a bit odd and inconvenient to me. Also I can't think of any earthly reason why anyone would want to leave the placenta attached to their baby for several days. It smells and would smell worse by the time it drops off and also it could possibly hinder breastfeeding as the best position for your baby to latch onto the breast is with his tummy against you, this would potentially be quite difficult with approx 600gms of smelly tissue attached to his tummy. I am all for leaving cutting of the cord until it ceases to pulsate, and have done this on many an occasion, once leaving it until the placenta was delivered. There could also be the issue of infection as the cord itself dries and falls of by a gangrenous process. However, I suppose it's a case of whatever floats your boat.
Reply:To me it is too much work, but who am I to frown on anyone's spiritual beliefs. There certainly isn't any reason not to do a lotus birth.
Reply:I wouldn't do that.
Reply:hm-mm i saw this in TV when the placenta was still attached to the baby the thing is you cant do much lay in bed all the time i would get bored
Reply:We also left the umbilical cord attached for a few minutes until the cord stops pulsing and all of the blood has entered the baby's body...otherwise you could deprive the baby of as much as 1/4 of their blood supply. I have never heard of a Lotus birth though and would like to look more into it!!
Reply:Get entonox and a ceasar under epidural if you can- then you might actually enjoy it!

Yes leaving the cord in place has been shown to be beneficial, for a few minutes after the birth, but I could not advocate this.

Like everything it is not worth upsetting yourself over if you can't do this - and there are very good reasons why it can't be done in some cases - time can be of the essence!
Reply:i would try it
