Question about lotus software?

What are the advantages and disadvantages of Lotus software versus Microsoft? Who even uses that kinda thing? Can you edicate me with computer stuff?

Question about lotus software?
Lotus was one of the earliest companies to develop and sell software to the general public... back in the dark ages of personal computers (in 1982 when IBM was king of computers and Microsoft was still 3 years away.)

Lotus was originally developed for business use rather than personal use. Back in the early '80s only the very rich could afford to buy personal computers. And those computers were pretty much IBM models because IBM made the business computers. (IBM = International Business Machines.)

When Bill Gates came out with Windows 1.0 in 1985 and Microsoft was born, more companies began building truly personal computers. Companies like Dell, Gateway, Hewlitt Packard, etc. Why? Because Bill Gates showed you could use Windows 1.0 without a degree in computer programming. Companies like Lotus (which was bought out by IBM in 1995) concentrated on the business side while Microsoft, and then Apple, concentrated on the "civilian" side of computers and software for people like you and me.

The major difference between Lotus and Microsoft is how things are done. In other words, compatibility. If you create a spreadsheet with Lotus 1-2-3 and one with Microsoft Excel, both spreadsheets can contain the exact same information. But Excel might not be able to read the Lotus spreadsheet and vice versa.

It's kinda like comparing a Ford and a Chevy. They'll both get you from point A to point B and back again. But you probably won't be able to use the Ford engine or transmission in the Chevy.

Personal computers are a part of our lives today and ordinary people use different kinds of software. Maybe a person works for a company that stil uses Lotus. That person might buy Lotus for her personal computer to be able to do company work at home. Ordinary people might use the built-in Microsoft software to balance a checkbook, create documents for school, create photo albums, organize recipes, and so much more.
